How to get more customers without paying for ads

Paid ads work, but they are a tap you have to keep paying to keep open — the moment you stop, the customers stop. Most small businesses in Egypt are sitting on a layer of demand they get for free and are not capturing: people who are already looking for what they sell and simply cannot find them.

Here is where that free demand comes from and how to actually get it, in rough order of effort-to-return.

1. Be findable when people search for what you sell

Every day, people in your area type "cafe near me", "[your service] in [your area]", or your business name into Google and maps. If you have no website and no claimed Google Business Profile, they find a competitor. This is the highest-intent customer there is — actively looking, ready to buy — and capturing them costs nothing per customer once the foundations are in place.

The foundations: a real website with genuine text about what you do, where, and your hours; a claimed and complete Google Business Profile; and your name, address and phone identical everywhere online. Do those three and you go from invisible to showing up for searches that already exist.

2. Turn happy customers into reviews

Google reviews do two jobs at once: they push you up in local results, and they are the reassurance a new customer needs before choosing you. Most satisfied customers will leave one if you ask at the right moment — right after a good haircut, a meal they enjoyed, a car handed over — with a direct link that opens the review form in one tap.

Make asking a habit: a card at the till with a QR code, a line in the WhatsApp confirmation, a polite request from staff. Twenty genuine five-star reviews will out-perform an ad budget for local trust.

3. Build a customer list you own

An ad reaches a stranger once. A phone number reaches a past customer whenever you want, for free. Every booking, order and enquiry should add a contact you can message later — when you launch a new service, run a seasonal offer, or simply remind a client they are due for their next visit.

This is the asset a small business most often fails to build. Ten messages to your own regulars about a new offer will usually beat the same spend on ads to people who have never heard of you.

4. Make referrals easy and worth it

Word of mouth is already your biggest source of customers — you just are not helping it along. A simple, stated referral offer ("bring a friend, you both get 20% off your next visit") gives your happy customers a reason and a script to recommend you. Put it on your site and mention it in person. It costs you margin only on business you would not otherwise have won.

5. Publish content that answers what your customers ask

The questions customers ask before they buy — "how much does X cost", "how long does Y take", "is Z safe for my hair" — are the exact things people also type into Google and AI assistants. A few clear, honest pages answering those questions bring in people at the research stage, and increasingly get your business surfaced when someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI for a recommendation. This compounds: the page you write once keeps working.

Where ads still make sense

Ads are worth it for a genuine launch, a time-limited event, or a new location where you have no organic presence yet and need customers this week. They are also fine as a top-up once the free channels above are running. The mistake is using paid ads to paper over the fact that people searching for you cannot find you — fix that first, and the ads you do run work harder.

Common questions

What is the single highest-return thing to do first?

Get a real website and claim your Google Business Profile, with consistent details. That captures the people already searching for your business or your category — the customers most likely to buy, at no cost per customer.

How many reviews do I actually need?

Twenty genuine, recent reviews put most local businesses in a strong position. Consistency matters more than volume — a steady trickle of new reviews beats a burst that then stops.

Isn’t collecting customer numbers complicated?

It happens automatically if your bookings, orders and enquiries run through a form or WhatsApp — each one leaves a contact. The point is to actually keep and use that list, not to run a separate campaign to build it.

Does this work without spending anything at all?

The channels themselves are free. There is usually a one-time cost to get the foundations right — a website, photos — and it takes weeks, not days, to build momentum. But the ongoing customer acquisition cost is far lower than paid ads.
